From Eternals to Sonic the Hedgehog, Here Are This Week’s Best Trailers


As May 2021 comes to a close and with summer right around the corner, blockbuster movie season and summer television seasons are already pulling out all the stops as theaters reopen and streaming services unveil new trailers to keep audiences at the edge of their seats in anticipation. Digital platforms, including Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video, continue to hype coming content, while Disney has finally shared new trailers for Eternals and Jungle Cruise.

Here are all the biggest and best trailers, teasers and promos released during the final week of May 2021.

Cobra Kai

Ever since Cobra Kai Season 3 premiered this past January, fans have wondered if the popular Netflix series planned to bring back Terry Silver. The founder of the original Cobra Kai dojo and principal antagonist of The Karate Kid Part IIISilver’s return is confirmed in the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Season 4 as his silhouetted figure is seen over audio clips from the 1989 film. Thomas Ian Griffith will be reprising his fan-favorite role.

Cobra Kai stars William Zabka, Ralph Macchio, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni Decenzo, Peyton List and Martin Kove. Season 4 has yet to receive a premiere date.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

The third installment of The Dark Pictures Anthology, House of Ashes, is coming later this year, with developer Supermassive Games and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment unveiling a new gameplay trailer. Following an American military unit in Iraq in 2003 that stumbles across an underground temple during a firefight against the Iraqi army, the soldiers quickly learn they are being stalked by a creature that defies conventional explanation.

Developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco, The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes will be released this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Eternals

After months of anticipation, Marvel Studios has finally released the first teaser trailer for Eternals, the newest team to join the ongoing saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on the Jack Kirby comic books of the same name, the trailer shows the cosmic race living relatively ageless for millennia as they observe humanity’s development. And as a new era of the MCU begins, the Eternals decide they are done standing on the sidelines as they leap into action.

Directed by Chloé Zhao from a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, Eternals stars Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman/Black Knight. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 5.

Far Cry 6

After facing pandemic-related delays from its planned launch this past February, Far Cry 6 has unveiled its sweeping, first-person gameplay in a showcase presented by Ubisoft. Running for over 40 minutes, the gameplay trailer is narrated by Giancarlo Esposito as he shares his vision of the future for the fictional nation of Yara as unrest against his rule mounts.

Developed and published by Ubisoft, Far Cry 6 will be released Oct. 7 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.

The Flash

Arrowverse fans were shocked earlier this month to learn that longtime Flash cast members Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh were both ending their tenure on the series with the current seventh season. Valdes’ character, Cisco Ramon, gets his emotional sendoff in Season 7’s twelfth episode “Good-Bye Vibrations,” with a promo revealing Team Flash facing off against Rainbow Raider as news of Cisco’s plans to leave Central City behind go public.

The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh. New episodes air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Gossip Girl

Nearly a full decade after the original Gossip Girl series went off the air, HBO Max is rebooting the teen drama for a new generation this July. A teaser trailer welcomes audiences back to the world of high society private schools in Manhattan as social media and the changing nature of the country teases a much different teenage wasteland than the original series.

Gossip Girl stars Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith. The series premieres July 8 on HBO Max.

Gunpowder Milkshake

Nothing brings people together quite like family, and this July’s Netflix original movie Gunpowder Milkshake reunites a long-lost mother and daughter who have both turned to a life of jet-setting contract killing. A bullet-riddled debut trailer for the upcoming action flick has Karen Gillan’s assassin character, Sam, protect a young girl as she turns to an elite group of killers for help in an all-out war.

Directed and co-written by Navot Papushado, Gunpowder Milkshake stars Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Chloe Coleman, Ralph Ineson, Adam Nagaitis, Michael Smiley, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Paul Giamatti. It will begin streaming on Netflix July 14 and play in theaters internationally this summer.

Jungle Cruise

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are about to go on an epic team-up to explore the untamed wilderness in search of a magical tree in Jungle Cruise. The Disney film’s latest trailer shows the duo venturing deep into the heart of the Amazon as they encounter all manner of beasts while trying to stay one step ahead of a rival German expedition navigating the river in a submarine.

Jungle Cruise, which is based on Disney Parks’ classic attraction of the same name, is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Whitehall, Emily Blunt, Jesse Plemons, Paul Giamatti and Èdgar Ramírez. The film will arrive in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 30.

Last Night in Soho

Acclaimed filmmaker Edgar Wright returns this October with the time-bending thriller Last Night in Soho. An aspiring fashion designer, Eloise, transports into the body of a young woman in the 1960s named Sandy. As Sandy dives into the height of Swinging London while pursuing a career as a singer, Sandy/Eloise quickly discovers this time-travel odyssey is more nightmarish than it seems.

Directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Last Night in Soho stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Terence Stamp and Diana Rigg. The film arrives in theaters on Oct. 22.

Legends of Tomorrow

As Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 continues, Astra Logue grapples with her life back on Earth after reigning over Hell in the previous season. As the pitfalls of living as a mortal begin to wear on her, Astra curses John Constantine’s name. And with a new friend in Astra’s life offering the reformed villain a tempting opportunity, Astra’s decision may impact the entire DCTV time-traveling team.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Olivia Swann, Jes Macallan, Adam Tsekhman, Shayan Sobhian, Lisseth Chavez and Raffi Barsoumian. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Loki

While Loki was last seen in Avengers: Endgame escaping the Avengers after seizing the Tesseract and departing for parts unknown in an alternate timeline, Marvel Studios’ next Disney+ original series has the God of Mischief right back in custody. Now a prisoner of the Time Variance Authority, Loki is tasked by his new overseers with saving the space-time continuum from an even greater threat or face deletion from reality.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard E. Grant. The series premieres June 9 on Disney+.

Lupin III Part 6

Everyone’s favorite master cat burglar Lupin III is returning for a sixth installment of the popular anime series, with a surprise teaser trailer confirming Lupin’s return this October. The teaser showcases running gunfights, elaborate disguises and more as Lupin finds himself on the move once again, with the new installment helping mark the 50th anniversary of Monkey Punch’s influential manga being adapted into anime.

Directed by Eiji Suganuma, Lupin the III: Part 6 will premiere this October.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin

Fresh off the successful release of Monster Hunter Rise this past March, Capcom’s epic fantasy franchise returns with the new title Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wing of Ruin this July. As a spinoff of the main Monster Hunter franchise and sequel to 2016’s Monster Hunter Stories, a mass disappearance of Rathalos and mysterious enragement of monsters leads players to form a party to investigate what is going wrong.

Developed by Capcom, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin launches on July 9 for Nintendo Switch and PC.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

It’s been nearly a full decade since a brand-new Ratchet & Clank game and the explosive duo are teaming back up for their first adventure on the PlayStation 5 for next month’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. A new gameplay trailer reveals more about the new Lombax Rivet as the evil Doctor Nefarious inadvertently damages the space-time continuum while searching for an alternate dimension where he emerges victorious.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, developed by Insomniac Games, launches for PlayStation 5 on June 11.

Record of Ragnarok

Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui’s popular manga series Record of Ragnarok is being adapted into an anime series premiering on Netflix next month. Featuring an epic fighting tournament between gods and mortals, the trailer reveals valkyries that can combine into powerful weapons capable of felling the divine, giving humanity its last hope to evade extinction.

Directed by Masao Tokubo and based on the manga series by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui, Record of Ragnarok premieres June 17 on Netflix.

Sonic the Hedgehog

This has been an especially big week for Sega’s flagship character Sonic the Hedgehog, as the blue speedster reached his 30th anniversary. A nostalgia-heavy trailer ahead of Sega’s Sonic showcase reminded audiences how the iconic video game character has endured over the past three decades, inspiring millions of fans worldwide. Sega has since announced that a remaster of Sonic Colors will be released this September, while next year will see the hedgehog get new video games, an animated series and a sequel to last year’s cinematic hit.

Developed and published by Sega, Sonic Colors: Ultimate will be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One One and PC on Sept. 7.

Streets of Rage 4

The popular side-scrolling, beat’em-up revival Streets of Rage 4 is getting even bigger with the Mr. X Nightmare DLC expansion. Adding three new playable characters to the urban brawl, the latest gameplay trailer for the DLC showcases Shiva in action as he unveils hard-hitting moves to pummel waves of enemies. Shiva joins Max Thunder and Estel Aguirre, with the DLC slated to launch later this year.

Developed by Dotemu, Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games, Streets of Rage 4 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. 

The Tomorrow War

Amazon Prime Video’s next original movie The Tomorrow War brings soldiers from different time periods together to combat a devastating alien invasion in the near future. In the film’s latest trailer, unassuming Dan Forester’s domestic bliss is completely upended by soldiers from the future arriving to recruit him into the explosive conflict, leading to a war of time-bending proportions.

Directed by Chris McKay, The Tomorrow War stars Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin, J.K. Simmons and Mary Lynn Rajskub. The film arrives on Amazon Prime Video July 2.
